“11,000 Radical Islamists Fighting in al-Qusayr, 2000 from Lebanon’s Tripoli”

Source : http://www.almanar.com.lb

The battle in the Syrian border city of al-Qusayr has been recently escalated amid the information revealed stating that more than eleven thousand radical Islamists have arrived in the area and involved in fighting the Syrian army, Addiyar local newspaper reported Friday.

Among the radicals there are about 2,000 young people from the Lebanese northern city of Tripoli, Addiyar added.

The newspaper noted, however, that "the former Prime Minister Saad Hariri offered $150 million paid by Gulf States for the Syrian armed opposition, which has practically become the al-Nusra Front of the Sunnis in the Levant.”

The fund was presented on behalf of Hariri so that fingers wouldn’t be pointed at the Gulf countries, but rather it will appear as an individual move, the daily indicated.

“Money transfers weren’t signed by Saad al-Hariri, but by individuals of Itani and Baba families," Addiyar further elaborated.

Media reported tackling Lebanese parties involvement in supporting terrorist takfiris in Syria have been increased recently.

The Syrian army foiled several attempts by Lebanese gangs trying to infiltrate into the Syrian territories to help al-Nusra Front fighting against the national army in the border city of al-Qusayr.

Al-Qusayr city lies on the northern Syrian border with Lebanon, and was occupied by terrorists and armed opposition gunmen since more than two years.

The Syrian Army launched on May 19 a large-scale operation to clear the area of terrorist gangs and liberate the citizens trapped there.

Government forces advance in central, southern Syria

Source : Xinhua

DAMASCUS, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian army on Wednesday regained full control over a military base in the strategic al- Qussair city in central Syria and dislodged rebels from towns near the capital Damascus in the south, the state-run SANA news agency said.

As part of its wide-scale operation in al-Qussair near the borders with Lebanon, the army regained full control over the al- Daba'a airbase after days of intense clashes with the rebels.

Pro-government media outlets said the army controlled large parts of the airport a couple of days ago, while the state-media said the army took full control over the base on Wednesday.

"An army unit entered al-Daba'a airport and cleared its structures from the terrorists who were holed up inside," SANA said, adding that the troops are still searching for the " terrorists" hiding in the airbase.

The Syrian army pushed its way into al-Qussair early Sunday after taking control of its suburb following 46 days of battling. The offensive aims to cut the rebels' main supply line.

Syrian sources expected the operation in al-Qussair to end within few days.

Meanwhile, SANA said the army on Wednesday also managed to reseize the villages of al-Duwair and Mhajrin in the northern outskirts of Homs province.

In the northwestern province of Idlib, SANA published the names of six fighters from Jordan, Libya and Saudi Arabia who were said to had been killed during an army operation in the countryside of Idlib.

Also in Idlib, the pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV said that an American and a British fighters were killed in clashes with the army.

Salim Harba, a Syrian military expert, told al-Mayadeen that more than 40,000 foreign fighters are currently fighting alongside rebels across Syria.

In an interview with al-Mayadeen, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said more than 28 countries have facilitated inroads for radical jihadists into Turkey before slipping into Syria to fight the government.

Meanwhile, the state news agency said the army controlled large parts of the eastern Gouta suburb of Damascus, namely the towns of Haran al-Awamid, al-Atyba, al-Abada, al-Baharyeh, Jarba, al- Zamanyeh, al-Qasimyeh and Adra.

It said the army was also closing in on rebels in the Sydi Miqdad and Bayt Sahem areas near Damascus.

The army's recent advancement is deemed by political experts as the Syrian administration's attempt to strengthen its position ahead of the forthcoming peace talks at a planned international conference on Syria slated for mid-June in Geneva.

Rebels TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian security forces seized back a cargo of heavy equipment belonging to the country's railway organization from a rebel group fighting President Bashar al-Assad's government.

The cargo which was worth $40.58mln was seized back after the Syrian forces' operations against the terrorist group in al-Hosseiniyah village in the outskirts of Deir al-Zour region.

The rebel group, whose members were killed by the Syrian security forces, had stolen the cargo and sold it to Turkish businessmen.

In another development on Wednesday, the Syrian troops targeted armed rebels in Damascus countryside, killing and wounding a large number of them, including their leaders.

Ammar al-Asfari, a terrorist leader affiliated to the so-called "Shabab al-Huda battalion" group, was killed along with several members of his group in al-Ob farms in Eastern al-Ghota, an informed source told the Syrian Arab News Agency.

Ten factories manufacturing explosive devices and mortar shells were destroyed in the Industrial Zone in Douma, the source added.

A unit of the army clashed with insurgents in the Western entrance of Haratsa city, killing so many anti-government fighters, including Abdullah Qasem, Abdul-Ghani al-Rayyes and insurgents' leader Mohammad Mahfoud, the source said.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs and terrorists against Syrian forces and civilians being reported across the country.

The US and its western and regional allies have long sought to topple Syrian President Bashar al- Assad and his ruling system. Media reports said that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups have received significantly more and better weapons, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The US daily, Washington Post, reported in May 2012 that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling Assad's government received significantly more and better weapons, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the Persian Gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.

Opposition activists who several months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said last May that the flow of weapons - most bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military in the past - has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Persian Gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month.

Syrian Army Arrests Saudi Spies

Source : Fars News Agency

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army on Friday arrested three Saudi intelligence officers who were engaged in terrorist activities in Syria.

"The Syrian army arrested three intelligence agents affiliated to the Saudi intelligence service headed by Bandar bin Sultan," sources said in an interview with the Lebanese al-Manar weekly on Wednesday.

The apprehended spies have confessed that their mission was contacting Israeli intelligence officials to provide them with intelligence reports on Syria's vital sites and centers.

The Saudi officers revealed that one of the assistants of Bandar bin Sultan has traveled to al-Qusseir city and held meetings with the ringleaders of the terrorist groups in the region, adding that he is the same guy who heads the arms smuggling network into Syria.

In a relevant event earlier this month, the top commander of foreign-backed militants fighting against the Syrian government said the militants have received a 35-ton arms shipment from Saudi Arabia.

Brigadier General Salim Idris, the chief of staff of the so-called Free Syrian Army, said on Thursday that the consignment will help armed men in their battles against the Syrian Army.

He added, however, that the munitions are not advanced and sophisticated enough to enable the militants defeat Syrian government forces.

The general noted, in particular, that the weapons will not be able to overpower tanks and planes in the strategic town of al-Qusseir, which is situated about 35 kilometers (22 miles) South of the Western city of Homs."

The armed rebels' attack and crimes in al-Duvair village came after they sustaine heavy defeats in al-Qusseir city which has almost been set free by the Syrian arm except for a few districts.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

Battle for Qusayr: Terrorists’ Supply Routes Totally Cut

Source : islamicinvitationturkey.com

Syrian Army continued Thursday its military operation in the northern city of Qusayr and the rest of its countryside chasing the terrorist groups deployed in the area. The second stage of the Qusayr battle was launched Wednesday, inflicting the opposition militant groups heavy losses and arresting many of their members.

Fierce clashes took place Thursday between the terrorists and the Syrian army in the northern quarter and western part of Basateen village.

Qazmaniya in the eastern Ghotta was reclaimed.

The second round will represent a great step towards resolving the battle, high rank Syrian source said.

The new round includes cutting off all the main routes which terrorists might use to escape the army blows; cutting off most of the terrorists’ supply routes; and dismantling mines and roadside improvised explosive devices (IED) planted by terrorists.

However, the so-called ‘Qusayr Coordinator’, an opposition media outlet on Facebook, admitted the killing of Bakr al-Mostafa, one of the takfiri leaders in the city, whose nickname was “Qasyoun”.

The coordinator also reported “violent attack” the terrorists are suffering from the eastern part of the city.

On the other hand, Syrian army defeated an infiltration attempt of militants from Lebanon across the mountains of Bureij near Qusayr city.

Many of them were claimed by machine guns of the Arab Syrian Army.

“A military unit has responded to an armed group that was trying to infiltrate into Qusayr through the Hasbaa area to aid the terrorists,” Syrian official source told SANA news agency.

“Among the dead were three of the armed groups’ leaders,” he said.

The Syrian army confronted militants attempting to infiltrate from the Qaa’ projects in Lebanon through Baa’youn Valley to the Josya area.

They suffered heavy losses as well, pointing out that they still have the ability to respond to Syrian fire, which is a strong evident of their huge supply of arms.

Qusayr city lies on the northern Syrian border with Lebanon, where terrorists and armed opposition gunmen are located and smuggle weapons to the militant groups across Syria.

The Syrian Army launched on Sunday a large-scale operation to clear the area of terrorist gangs and liberate the citizens stuck there.

130 killed and wounded in bombing by Syrian terrorist

Source : http://old.mehrnews.com

TEHRAN, May 27 (MNA) –Syrian armed terrorists have bombarded Aleppo central prison with rockets, killing at least 30 people including convicts and injuring 100 others.

MNA quoted Syrian Al-Watan daily reporting that there had been bombing in Aleppo central prison by the armed terrorists groups, which had killed over 30 people.

The massacre occurred when the terrorist gunmen who were surrounding the prison, targeted there with tanks with cannons. A nearby village resident said that the prison hosted nearly 4,500 prisoners, including elderly people, women, and their children.

The terrorist attack came after armed groups tried to force an entry to inside. They had tried before by two bulldozers armed with bombs, but the security wardens aborted their attempt with the aid from army forces in the place.

This was for the tenth time that terrorists launched an attack to enter the prison. The attack was intended to free criminal prisoners who are family members of terrorist groups, and to deploy them against Bashar al-Assad.

Military analysts described the plan as less critical and terrorist movements in different parts of Aleppo as slow. They also emphasized that the initiative is in army’s hands, which has no less experience and will in combat.

Internal Dispute Kills Notorious Terrorist Ringleader in Northwestern Syria

Source : Fars News

TEHRAN (FNA)- Clashes between two main Syrian armed rebel groups in Reef (outskirts of) Idlib in Northwestern Syria killed tens of armed rebels, including a notorious terrorist leader.

The clashes erupted between members of the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda and Lava al-Saqour terrorist groups in Mar Tamsarin of Reef Idlib today, killing more than 50 terrorists from both sides, including Lava al-Saqour's ringleader Shokri Ajauj.

In similar clashes last month, harsh disputes erupted among the Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels over links and cooperation with the notorious terrorist group, the al-Qaeda.

Al-Ahd news website reported in April that the harsh disputes between the FSA and al-Nusra Front over the latter's pledging allegiance to the al-Qaeda have at times even grown so violent that have led to an exchange of fire.

The groups affiliated to FSA in a statement expressed their opposition to the al-Nusra Front's allegiance to the al-Qaeda.

Last month, leader of al-Nusra Front Abu Mohammed al-Jawalani pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda.

The pledge was made in an audio message by al-Jawalani a day after al-Qaeda in Iraq said al-Nusra Front in Syria is part of its "Islamic state", al-Mayadeen TV reported.

The differences between FSA and al-Qaeda-linked group came while the former Head of the so- called Syrian National Coalition Sheikh Ahmad Maaz Al-Khatib had several times voiced support for al-Nusra Front.

Last December, Al-Khatib criticized the Washington's decision to put the al-Nusra Front in the US list of terrorists.

Al-Nusra Front has claimed responsibility for most of the fatal bombings targeting civilians and government institutions across Syria after the outbreak of the country's crisis in early 2011. Damascus has repeatedly warned of the growing threat of such groups to not only Syria, but the entire region as well.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against the Syrian police, border guards, statesmen, army and the civilians being reported across the country.

Thousands of people have been killed since terrorist and armed groups turned protest rallies into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

12 Chechen fighters killed in central Syria: activists

Source : Xinhua

DAMASCUS, May 24 (Xinhua) -- A total of 12 fighters from Chechnya were killed Friday in Syria's central Hama province, activists said.

The fighters were killed when two rockets landed in the al- Hamra village in the eastern countryside of Hama, the Britain- based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The report spelled no more details.

The Syrian government has long been charging that foreign fighters are joining the battles alongside the opposition rebels, accusing regional countries, such as Turkey, of facilitating the flow of those jihadists into Syria.

On the other hand, the opposition activists charge that members of Lebanon's Hezbollah are fighting alongside the Syrian government troops in the central city of al-Qussair where decisive battles have been raging since last week.

The 26-month-old crisis in Syria has claimed the lives of more than 70,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands internally and to neighboring countries, according to a recent UN tally.

The US daily, Washington Post, reported in May that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling Assad's government have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the Persian Gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.

Opposition activists who several months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said in May that the flow of weapons - most bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military in the past - has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Persian Gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month.

The army pushed its way into al-Qussair city early Sunday after taking control of its surburb after 46 days of battling.

Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry send a letter to the UN Secretary General and the Security Council President, in which it talked about the Syrian Army’s destroying of an Israeli vehicle which crossed the ceasefire line in Golan Heights from the occupied territories.

"Subsequent to our previous letters addressed to you on the Israeli violations against the Syrian sovereignty and its breach of the Disengagement Agreement, the latest of which was our letter on May 8, 2013, an Israeli vehicle breached the cease-fire line at 1:10 am on May 21, 2013 and headed toward Bir Ajam village that is located in the liberated area of the Golan," the letter read.

It noted that the foreign-backed armed groups were present in Bir Ajam village, toward which the Israeli vehicle was heading.

"While Syria places these facts before the Security Council, it once again reaffirms its right to immediately respond to any violation of its sovereignty and the sanctity of its land, and that lies within the framework of practicing its right to self- defense," the Ministry said, according to official news agency, SANA.

The letter also referred to the incident of firing two rockets by the Israeli enemy from the occupied site of Tal al-Faras toward one of the Syrian sites in al- Zubaydiah village without causing casualties.

"Those two incidents constitute a new violation of the UN Charter and the Disengagement Agreement and an aggression against the Syrian sovereignty," said the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry.

"The Syrian Arab Republic dealt with this violation in the framework of practicing the right to self-defense that is secured by the UN Charter," the Ministry added, noting that the Syrian government has already drawn the attention of the Security Council's President and the UN Secretary General to these Israeli violations and Israel's intervention in the Syrian internal affairs.

Syrian Army Detains French, British, Belgian, Dutch, Qatari Officers in al-Qusseir

Source : Fars News Agency

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian troopers detained dozens of foreign officers in the restive al-Qusseir region, sources said on Tuesday, adding that most of the detainees were from France, Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Qatar.

Assim Qansou, a representative of the socialist party in Lebanon's parliament, told the Lebanese al- Nashrah newspaper that during the battle in al-Qusseir city, the Syrian army has arrested tens of French, British, Belgian, Dutch and Qatari officers.

The EU's anti-terror chief said in April that hundreds of Europeans are now fighting with rebel forces in Syria against Bashar al-Assad's government.

Gilles de Kerchove estimated the number in Syria at about 500.

Intelligence agencies are concerned some could join groups linked to al-Qaeda and later return to Europe to launch terrorist attacks.

The UK, Ireland and France are among the EU countries estimated to have the highest numbers of fighters in Syria.

"Not all of them are radical when they leave, but most likely many of them will be radicalized there, will be trained," de Kerchove said.

"And as we've seen this might lead to a serious threat when they get back."

Across Europe, intelligence agencies have stepped up investigations, says the BBC's Europe correspondent Duncan Crawford.

In Britain and Belgium they have increased efforts to track how people are recruited.

In the Netherlands, officials have raised the terror threat level there to "substantial" - partly over concerns about radicalized citizens returning from Syria.

The Syrian army announced on Tuesday that it found an Israeli military vehicle during its wide-scale attack in the central city of al-Qusseir.

DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad insisted he will not resign before the end of his mandate in 2014 as a car bomb exploded in the capital Damascus on Saturday killing at least three people.

"To resign would be to flee," Assad said in an interview with the Argentine newspaper Clarin when asked if he would consider stepping aside as called for by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

"I don't know if Kerry or anyone else has received the power of the Syrian people to talk in their name about who should go and who should stay. That will be determined by the Syrian people in the 2014 presidential elections."

He nevertheless said he welcome a US-Russian peace initiative to end Syria's two- year civil war.

The United States and Russia are trying to convene a peace conference in Geneva that would bring together members of the regime and the rebels fighting to oust Assad.

"We have received the Russian-US approach well and we hope that there will be an international conference to help Syrians overcome the crisis," Clarin quoted Assad as saying.

He added, however, that "we do not believe that many Western countries really want a solution in Syria. And we don't think that the forces that support the terrorists want a solution to the crisis."

Syria calls the rebels who have been fighting to overthrow the regime "terrorists" Saturday evening state television accused "terrorists" of detonating a car bomb in a north Damascus neighbourhood, saying it killed at least three people and wounded five others.

The state broadcaster said the bomb was placed in a car in the Rokn Eddin eighbourhood and that a disposal team was sent in to defuse another device.

"The terrorist explosion was the result of a big bomb concealed in a car ... Three people were killed and five others wounded according to a provisional toll," it said.

In the interview with Clarin and the Argentine news agency Telam, Assad spoke at length and also denied that his government has used chemical weapons against civilians.

The use of chemical weapons "would mean the death of thousands or tens of thousands of people in a matter of minutes. Who could hide something like that?" he asked Telam. He nevertheless acknowledged that "thousands of Syrians have died" in the conflict that broke out in March 2011 as a peaceful uprising against the regime before turning into a full-fledged war.

The organization is a long-time ally of the Syrian regime and has sent fighters to battle alongside Assad's troops, particularly in the Qusayr district of the central province of Homs.

Damascus has long served as a supply conduit for Iran-backed Hezbollah, and Assad said they would reward the group for their loyalty.

"We have decided to give them everything," the newspaper quoted him as saying, without elaborating.

"For the first time we feel that we and they are living in the same situation and they are not just an ally we help with resistance," he said.

"We have decided that we must move forward towards them and turn into a nation of resistance like Hezbollah, for the sake of Syria and future generations."

Assad was quoted as saying Syria could "easily" respond to Israeli air strikes by "firing a few rockets at Israel."

"But we want strategic revenge, by opening the door of resistance and turning all of Syria into a country of resistance."

"After the strike, we are convinced that we are fighting the enemy now, we are pursuing its soldiers deployed throughout our country," he said, in apparent reference to rebel forces, which the regime has accused of being allied with Israel.

Israel reportedly carried out two raids last week against military targets inside Syria, killing dozens of military personnel.

Israeli sources said the strikes targeted weapons bound for Hezbollah.

Israel has warned repeatedly that it will not allow Syria to transfer advanced weaponry to the Lebanese group, with which it fought a devastating war in 2006.

Israeli warplanes hit targets inside Syria early on Friday and Sunday mornings, raising new fears that the Syrian conflict, which is now in its third year, could draw in the rest of the region.

“Syria will respond to the Israeli aggression and will choose the moment to do so,” the unnamed official close to the Syrian government said on Monday.

“It might not be immediate because Israel now is on high alert,” he noted, adding, “We will wait but we will answer.”

Syria says the Israeli regime has carried out airstrikes against three military sites near the Syrian capital on Sunday morning, 48 hours after another reported Israeli strike against a research center in the country.

“The international community should know that the complex situation in the region has become more dangerous after this aggression,” the Syrian government said after an emergency meeting.

Syria “has not just a right but a duty to protect the homeland and the state and the people from any attack, whether internal or external, by all ways and means and capabilities available,” it added.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry has sent letters to the United Nations and its Security Council stating that Israel’s aggression shows the link between Tel Aviv and terrorist groups operating in Syria including the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.

The comments came in a statement read out by Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi after an emergency cabinet meeting.

While branding the attack targeting the Syrian army with rockets as "flagrant," the statement did not overtly speak of any possible responses to the attack.

"Syria is a state that does not waver and does not accept humiliation and will not accept its sovereignty to be infringed upon either at home or abroad," al-Zoubi said, warning that those who mess with Syria's sovereignty must carefully study their options and shoulder the responsibility.

"Syria is committed to the option of resistance and whoever thinks that Syria can be breakable is wrong and mistaken and must repeat his calculations," he added.

Militants used chemical material against civilians near Idlib: Syria

Source : Tehran Times

Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar al- Jaafari has said that the foreign- backed militants in Syria have used chemical material against civilians during an attack on a town near Idlib.

Bashar al-Jaafari said at a press conference on Tuesday that the militants spread the contents of plastic bags containing chemical material during the attack.

Many residents were affected by the armed groups’ “heinous and irresponsible act,” the Syrian envoy said, warning that it was an attempt to “implicate the Syrian government on a false basis.”

Some of the victims were transferred to Turkey for treatment, Jaafari added.

The envoy went on to say that 'today or tomorrow Ankara and Western media would launch a new propaganda campaign against Damascus and claim that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons against its own people.'

Reports say that two people were killed and 20 others injured in the militants’ chemical attack in Idlib.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama has said Washington did not know how chemical material was used in another recent attack in Aleppo.

The Syrian government requested the UN to dispatch a fact- finding mission to the country after reports circulated that the foreign-backed militants had used chemical weapons against civilians in Khan al-Assal district of the northwestern province of Aleppo on March 19. Over two dozen people were killed and more than 100 injured in the chemical attack.

Obama said at a press conference on Tuesday that, "If I can establish in a way that not only the United States but also the international community feel confident in the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime, then that is a game-changer."

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government security forces and army personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
