DAMASCUS, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian army killed the leader of the al- Qaida-linked Nusra Front in Syria's central city of al- Qussair on Tuesday during intense fighting between the rebels and government troops, the pan- Arab al-Mayadeen TV said.
Abu Omar was killed alongside 10 of his fighters Tuesday as the Syrian army kept advancing for the third consecutive day to regain the strategic city near the Lebanese borders.
The army pushed its way into al-Qussair city at early time Sunday after taking control of its countryside in a 46-day military operation. On Monday, the state media in Syria said the army was still advancing in the strategic city and took full control over its eastern part.
The rebels in al-Qussair have been buoyed by Salafi groups in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli and Ersal. The Syrian government has recently warned that it would not waver in responding to the armed groups which are moving in an out between Syria and Lebanon.
Over the past two days, clashes between supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Sunni Muslim fighters raged in Lebanon's Tripoli on the heels of the Syrian troops operation in al-Qussair.
