Government forces advance in central, southern Syria

Source : Xinhua

DAMASCUS, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian army on Wednesday regained full control over a military base in the strategic al- Qussair city in central Syria and dislodged rebels from towns near the capital Damascus in the south, the state-run SANA news agency said.

As part of its wide-scale operation in al-Qussair near the borders with Lebanon, the army regained full control over the al- Daba'a airbase after days of intense clashes with the rebels.

Pro-government media outlets said the army controlled large parts of the airport a couple of days ago, while the state-media said the army took full control over the base on Wednesday.

"An army unit entered al-Daba'a airport and cleared its structures from the terrorists who were holed up inside," SANA said, adding that the troops are still searching for the " terrorists" hiding in the airbase.

The Syrian army pushed its way into al-Qussair early Sunday after taking control of its suburb following 46 days of battling. The offensive aims to cut the rebels' main supply line.

Syrian sources expected the operation in al-Qussair to end within few days.

Meanwhile, SANA said the army on Wednesday also managed to reseize the villages of al-Duwair and Mhajrin in the northern outskirts of Homs province.

In the northwestern province of Idlib, SANA published the names of six fighters from Jordan, Libya and Saudi Arabia who were said to had been killed during an army operation in the countryside of Idlib.

Also in Idlib, the pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV said that an American and a British fighters were killed in clashes with the army.

Salim Harba, a Syrian military expert, told al-Mayadeen that more than 40,000 foreign fighters are currently fighting alongside rebels across Syria.

In an interview with al-Mayadeen, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said more than 28 countries have facilitated inroads for radical jihadists into Turkey before slipping into Syria to fight the government.

Meanwhile, the state news agency said the army controlled large parts of the eastern Gouta suburb of Damascus, namely the towns of Haran al-Awamid, al-Atyba, al-Abada, al-Baharyeh, Jarba, al- Zamanyeh, al-Qasimyeh and Adra.

It said the army was also closing in on rebels in the Sydi Miqdad and Bayt Sahem areas near Damascus.

The army's recent advancement is deemed by political experts as the Syrian administration's attempt to strengthen its position ahead of the forthcoming peace talks at a planned international conference on Syria slated for mid-June in Geneva.

Syrian Army Surrounds Strategic Town of Qusayr

Source : Al Akhbar English

The Syrian army continued to make advances against opposition forces, this time in the strategic area of Rif Qusayr along both banks of the Assi River near the border with Lebanon.

Qusayr has played a key role in the conflict due to its proximity to the Lebanese border, where weapons, supplies, and fighters are smuggled through the rugged hills near the Lebanese town of Ersal.

For months now, the opposition has had complete control of the city of Qusayr, with an ability to reach north to Homs and south to the northern suburbs of Damascus, where government forces are waging ferocious battles with the opposition.

However, the western banks of the Assi River – home to many Lebanese villages located inside Syrian territory – remained under the control of the army with support from the local Popular Committees, which are in turn backed by Hezbollah. The opposition nevertheless had the ability to cross over to the western side of the river where it enjoyed a strong presence in some villages.

The situation began to change around ten days ago when the Syrian military took the area of Nabi Mando, which not only overlooks most of Rif Qusayr but also contains a bridge connecting the two banks of the river. They also managed to take the town of Ibil to the north, effectively cutting Qusayr off from Homs.

The battles in these areas came at a heavy cost to the opposition. Calls for assistance appeared on their social media sites, saying that Syrian army and Hezbollah forces were closing in on Qusayr.

While some local sources suggested that the army’s offensive will not end until it has expelled the opposition from Qusayr, others said that the target of the operation is limited to isolating the city and preventing the fighters in it from either moving north to Homs or south toward the suburbs of Damascus.

At the same time as the Qusayr operation, the Syrian army carried out a similar offensive to the southwest of Damascus, where again the opposition lost ground and took some heavy casualties. Here again, the military’s objective is to cut off the smuggling of weapons coming from opposition-held areas in the Golan to fighters in the capital’s suburbs.

According to close observers, these military operations are part of an overall plan to cut off the opposition’s supply lines from Lebanon in the west, Jordan in the south, and Turkey in the north, while at the same time expanding what the regime is calling a “secure zone,” starting with the areas around Damascus and Homs.

Up to 400 Syrians flee Qusayr for Lebanon

LBCI News

Nearly 400 Syrians from around the rebel-held central town of Qusayr have fled for neighboring Lebanon in the past 24 hours, a Lebanese security official reported on Tuesday. "Among them are men, women and children," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

A Syrian security official told AFP on Monday that the army hoped to eliminate the last pockets of resistance in the central city of Homs and nearby Qusayr by the end of the week to free up troops for battle zones in the north, such as Aleppo.

Many of the villagers crossed the border on foot, while others came by motorbike or donkey, an AFP journalist in the eastern Bekaa Valley said.

Fars News Agency :: Syrian Army Reinforces Positions along Borders with Lebanon

Syrian Army Reinforces Positions along Borders with Lebanon

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army reinforced its positions along its borders with Lebanon after recent clashes with a number of terrorist groups there.

The Syrian army dispatched armored vehicles to al-Dabusiyeh region along its border with Lebanon after it clashed with insurgents near Al-Ubudiyyah area, the Lebanese al-Manar television reported.

Despite efforts by the Lebanese army to prevent the flow of armed men and Western-made weapons into Syrian soil, they are still smuggled into Syria.

The Syrian army has stationed forces along its borderline with Lebanon and it has to confront the rebels trespassing the borders everyday.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

In October 2011, calm was eventually restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies are seeking hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of increasing unrests in Syria.

The US daily, Washington Post, reported in May that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling the President Bashar al-Assad's government have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the Persian Gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.

According to the report, material is being stockpiled in Damascus, in Idlib near the Turkish border and in Zabadani on the Lebanese border.

Opposition activists who several months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said in May that the flow of weapons - most bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military in the past - has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Persian Gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month.

Ban Ki-moon urges to stop States to stop arming Rebels in Syria

Source: Breaking News Syria

United Nations Secretary, General Ban Ki- moon, has warned of the escalation of violence along the Syrian-Turkish border and the effect of Syria’s unrest on Lebanon.

"The escalation of the conflict along the Syrian-Turkish border and the impact of the crisis on Lebanon are extremely dangerous. They show that this is a regional calamity with global ramifications," Ban said at the opening of the World Forum for Democracy in the French city of Strasbourg.

He also urged countries supplying weapons to both Damascus and the insurgents to stop militarizing the unrest in Syria.

"I am deeply concerned by the continued flow of arms to both the Syrian government and opposition forces. I urge again those countries providing arms to stop doing so," he said.

"Militarization only aggravates the situation … I am calling on all concerned to abandon the use of violence, and move toward a political solution. That is the only way out of the crisis," the UN chief added.

Syrian rebels have Ukrainian-made arms - BBC:

Source: Voice of Russia

BBC reporters have found out that Syrian rebels have boxes with Ukrainian-made arms at their disposal.

The boxes were meant for the Saudi Army. But the way the boxes have ended up in the hands of Syrian rebel fighters has not been disclosed.

To prove their findings, the reporters have published, on their website, a photo of a box with a marking that makes it clear that the box content has been produced at a factory in the city of Lugansk, and then sent by plane from Gostomel airport, near Kiev.

The city of destination is Riyadh.

The Saudi authorities have refused to comment on the report. Meanwhile, Damascus has long since pointed out that it's facing the resistance of well-trained rebel fighters that rely heavily on foreign aid.

Free Syrian Army Fighters Killed on Lebanon's border

Source:  RIA Novosti

Dozens of fighters of Free Syrian Army (FSA) have been killed in a large-scale operation of government forces in Homs province, near the border with Lebanon, Lebanon-based Al- Mayadeen TV reported on Saturday.

A base of one of the armed groups near a village of al-Qusayr was destroyed. 40 rebels including the leader of the group were killed.

Government forces and armed opposition waged battles in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. The battle for the bridge in Sahour neighborhood lasts for the second day. This bridge is of great strategic importance to both sides as control over it allows rebels to communicate with the province, where they get reinforcements, weapons and ammunition and for the government forces it provides access to the eastern districts of Aleppo that are controlled by the rebels.

Several militants, four of them Turkish citizens, were killed on Saturday in the other district of Aleppo, Bustan al-Qasr, Syrian news agency SANA reported. Government forces repelled the attack of armed militants who “supposedly came from Turkey” in the north of Aleppo, said in the statement.

The Syrian conflict has claimed up to 20,000 lives according to various Syrian opposition groups. The UN puts the death toll at over 18,000 people. The Syrian authorities say 8,000 were killed.

Turkey retaliates after Syrian mortar shell lands in southern Turkey

English.news.cn 2012-10-06 17:44:09

ANKARA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkey fired back after a mortar shell believed to be fired by Syrian troops at opposition groups on the border landed Saturday morning in southern Turkey, an officia statement said.

"The Syrian mortar shell landed close to a rural area near the Guvecci village of Yayladagi town of Hatay province. Turkey retaliated against Syria by firing four mortar shells on Syria," said the statement issued by Hatay Governor's Office on its website.

Turkey and Syria have been exchanging fire sporadically on the border for days, after a mortar shell from the Syrian side fell Wednesday in the Turkish border town of Akcakale in the southeastern Sanliurfa province and killed five Turks.

On Friday, a Syrian mortar shell fell at a spot about 50 meters away from the border in Hatay's Asagipulluyazi village. Turkish army "fired back at targets" within Syria, but did not cause any casualties, said Hatay Governor Mehmet Celalettin Lekesiz.

The Turkish government said Wednesday in a statement that "Our armed forces in border region have given the required response in line with the rule of engagements. Targets in Syria, which were detected by radar, were shot by shelling."

"Turkey will never remain unresponsive against these sorts of provocations of Syrian regime withi the framework of rules of engagement and international law," the statement added.

In an emergency session on Thursday, Turkish parliament approved a motion for cross-border military operations inside Syria.

Ankara has repeatedly complained about the spillover of Syrian artillery and gun fire into its territory. Last week, the Turkish government signaled that it would take action if mortar strikes were repeated on its territory from Syria.

Turkey, once an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad but now a leading voice urging him to quit, shelters more than 90,000 Syrian refugees and has provided Syrian rebel army leaders with sanctuary.
